Iománaíocht Agus An Madra

A few action photographs, courtesty of Peter. (Who, incidentally, has implemented a new pricing model to make his photographs more affordable. Hey, it's my blog, I will shamelessly promote if I want to.)

Striking the Sliotar

Taking Possession

Wrestling for Control

I told Toby to drop it and he wouldn't, so we had to play the big control game, which I'm told I cannot lose. It took about ten minutes and involved a lot of huffing, puffing, and growling (all on my part - Toby didn't bat an eyelash) but eventually I was victorious.

you both look pretty damned determined.

if you grab toby by the scruff of his neck, i bet he'll drop it. it works for riley, anyway. that's where mama dogs grab and shake to teach a lesson when they're pups.

I'm laughing out loud. I would totally lose that fight. Jack just weighs 17 pounds and I barely win with him.

Ya'll are too cute.

Laurie - That's sort of what I was going for - pulling him at the sides of the head. At one point, I had his front legs all the way off the ground (I was holding him around the middle - not by the scruff), because the dog lady told us that to lift them off the ground and shake them was very embarrasing for them. Not embarrassing enough for Toby to give up a sliotar. It's easier to get a Kong out of his mouth, because there's more to pull. He can sink his teeth into a sliotar (which is about the same size and texture as a baseball) and it's nearly impossible to forcibly take it from him. I will try the scruff properly next time.

Kaycie - Thanks. Peter was taking a series of shots and there are a few where we're fighting for the sliotar and it looks quite unseemly. That was one of the tame shots. :)

We always use the slide a finger in the side of the mutt's mouth and press upwards if the pup won't "give" whatever it is he has. Although by now he is quite good at giving up whatever he has, bones, balls, plastic bottles, he'll drop it all on command. It is one of the commands I pay particular attention to.

My first dog even dropped a live mouse she'd caught when I told her to.

Great photos.

I'd be terrified if I saw you coming at me with that camogie (or whatever the sport is called) bat in your hand...

Great pics!

Fence - A live mouse? I hope you were outside when that happened. I agree - the Drop It command is very important. Toby would definitely drop a live mouse for Peter. For me....not so much.

Dave - The Irish word for it is camán (cah-mawn). In English, it's a hurley. I think a baseball bat would probably do more damage to a human, but I wouldn't want to try out that hypothesis.

I've been following your blog. I also live in Macroom, and I've trained dogs for more than 25 years.

We use a tennis racket to play ball with our dogs. We're on a few acres so the ball really flies. They love to catch frisbees too.

A bit of professional advise, going for your dogs throat is akin to attacking him, which I'm sure isn't your intent. When dogs fight, they go for the throat first. If at any time your dog gets mad at you, there's no way you can protect yourself if he attacks. The photo you posted puts you in a dangerous position.

My recommendation would be one of two things...a) make him lay down and get him onto his back, which is forcing him into a submissive position. He will give up the ball as a sign of submitting to you...b) tickle the back of his tongue when you try to take the ball from him and tell him "drop it" or "let go" or "release" while doing so.

In either instance, once he's relinquished the ball to you, be sure to praise him. And if you have a treat in your pocket, give one to him. Bits of cheese, kept in a plastic sandwich baggie to keep your pocket clean, works great. Or even chopped up pieces of meat, like cooked sandwich meat. It doesn't take a lot. Just a taste. Use anything tasty that he doesn't normally get for a treat so it makes this new behavior something special.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Anonymous - Thanks for the advice. I will it out next time. Although, I'm afraid treats are no substitute for sliotars - he doesn't tend to take treats when he's playing catch.
